CHARACTER INFORMATION
Name: Mary Winchester (nee Campbell)
Canon: Supernatural
Original or Alternate Universe: Original
Canon Point: March of 1978. After she got married to John Winchester and they started their happy, normal life together. About a month before they would conceive their first son, Dean.
Number: 112

Setting: Earth, 20th Century. In Mary’s world, supernatural creatures are real but they aren’t recognized by most of the human population. Mary was raised as a hunter, meaning she knows all about the things that go bump in the night. She and her parents were part of a small community of people who know about supernatural creatures and work to fight them in order to protect regular people. Mary, however, wasn’t very fond of the hunter lifestyle and she was determined to get out and marry her normal boyfriend John Winchester. At her canon point, she has managed to do just that.

History: Mary was born December 5, 1954 to Samuel and Deanna Campbell in Lawrence, Kansas. Samuel and Deanna were hunters and they raised their daughter to be a hunter too. As a result, Mary is very skilled with many different types of weapons as well as hand-to-hand combat. However, Mary attended school like any other child and made friends with other kids in the town. When she was in high school she met and started dating John Winchester, the son of a local mechanic from a family of mechanics. Samuel didn’t exactly approve of him but Mary started dating him anyway. She ended up falling in love with him because he was “everything that a hunter isn’t.”

As she grew up, Mary became very disillusioned with the hunting lifestyle. She hates it and wants nothing more to get out of the business and live a normal life. She wants to be safe and have a family and the worst thing she could ever imagine would be raising her children as hunters. When she was 18, she finally found her escape in John who wanted to marry her and could give her the normal life that she wanted so badly. She was even prepared to run away to be with him if she had to. And then on April 30, 1973 she met Dean.

She first met Dean (secretly her future son sent back in time by an angel) when she confronted him in an alley way after she noticed him tailing her and John on a date. Before she could do any real damage, he asked her if she was a hunter and identified himself as one. She then agreed to meet him back at her house after John dropped her off. She introduced Dean to her father and he ended up having dinner with her and her parents, over which they talked shop. It turned out that Dean and the Campbells were hunting the same thing that had been killing local residents but Samuel refused Dean's offer to work together.

Mary accompanied her father the next day to interview the family of the latest victim where they ran into Dean. By interviewing the son, Mary and Dean find out that they're hunting a yellow-eyed demon that is making deals with unknowing people. Dean says he's going to go kill the demon. The Campbells think this is impossible and have no part in it until Mary finds out that the next place the demon was expected to show up was at her friends house. Mary and Samuel get there before Dean does and they try to fight off the yellow-eyed demon. Dean shows up and scares the demon off but hat's the moment that the demon first sets his sights on Mary.

After her encounter with the demon, Mary is understandably freaked outs. She runs to John and asks him to take her away like he promised. John drives her out to a secluded spot along the river and proposes to her. But before she can answer her father shows up and pulls her out of the car. As he drags her off, John tries to stop him and Samuel breaks his neck, killing him. It turns out that Samuel is possessed by the yellow-eyed demon. The demon tells her that he didn't just kill John, but her mother and father too. The demon offers to bring John back to life and give Mary the chance at the normal life she always wanted in exchange for permission to enter her house in ten years time, promising that no one will get hurt if he's not interrupted. Desperate not to be alone, Mary makes the deal and John is brought back to life.

After that night, Mary doesn't see Dean again. She and John go on to get married and start their life together, despite the death of her parents. Mary never tells John about her being a hunter and they end up living happily in a small house in Lawrence until the day she wakes up aboard the Tranquility.

Personality: Mary is a strong-willed girl with a lot of spunk. Being raised to hunt monsters means she has a very broad knowledge of the dark things that exist in the world and she is in no way naive of the dangers. However, she believes that if she were able to get out of the hunting life she would be safe, which definitely isn't true. She's very strong though, and she would do anything to protect the people she cares about, especially when she knows there's something she can do. She has a good sense of humor but she can have something of an attitude sometimes, especially toward her father when he was still alive. They would always be arguing over something or other. She can also be sarcastic and sassy as the best of them when the situation warrants.

Maybe in response to her father’s guarded and suspicious personality, Mary is more open to trusting other people. She gets her manners and people skills from her mother, tending toward being polite (unless you're following her and her boyfriend around, then she'll fight first and ask questions later). She’s cautious, thanks to her upbringing, but she is much more willing to talk to and work with other people. Even more so after leaving the hunting life. She’s also very kind and sympathetic, always looking for the good in people. She is very caring when it comes to others which helps people to feel comfortable talking to her. This helped her gather information from witnesses during her years hunting with her parents but it also reflects her interactions with people in other areas of her life.

Stemming from her nurturing nature, Mary wants nothing more than to be a mother and to raise her children in normal everyday life. She loves John more than anything and although she misses her parents terribly, she's also glad to have the hunting portion of her life behind her.

Abilities, Weaknesses and Power Limitations:
Abilities: Due to her hunter upbringing, Mary is very adept with many types of weapons, including guns and knives. She is also skilled at hand-to-hand combat. She has extensive knowledge about many supernatural beings and knows how to fight and kill them. Because of her hunter training, she would also be more inclined to notice strange/supernatural happenings or characteristics than the average person. And if she did notice something strange, she would be able to make more sense of it as something supernatural.

Weaknesses: When it comes to physical weaknesses, Mary has all the usual weaknesses that come from being only human. She has more emotional weaknesses however, the worst one being her love for John. The demon Azazel was able to manipulate Mary into making a deal with him in order to save John’s life. Using the people she loves against her is definitely an easy way to get to Mary. Another weakness of hers has to be her halfway-delusion that she can attempt to live a normal civilian life after being a hunter and making a deal with a demon. Her inclination to sometimes see things as she wants to see them, as opposed to how they actually are could cause her problems.

Power Limitations: Mary doesn’t have any special powers aside from her hunter training. She’s still just a normal human.

Inventory: A bracelet with protective charms from several different religions, her wedding band/engagement ring, a silver knife and a rosary.
Appearance: Mary is 5’ 5” tall and a petite build although she keeps in shape and is rather strong for her size. She has blond hair that falls a little past her shoulders and dark blue eyes. And she is, to quote the words of her son Dean, a “babe." Photos here and here.
Age: 23 (at the canon point specified)

SAMPLES
Log Sample:
The new house, as empty as it was, felt warm and comforting to Mary as she sat at the kitchen table, unwrapping dishes from a box. In fact, there were boxes all over the place in various states of unpacking, but the place was already starting to feel like home. She took the china dining set out of the box on the table and carefully unwrapped each piece one by one, pausing every so often to admire the dishes that used to belong to her mother before stowing them away in a cabinet.

She was humming softly to herself – Hey Jude – and she didn’t hear John come home until he was just behind her. Living the civilian life hadn’t gotten rid of her hunter training, but her instant reliance on it had definitely lessened. She wasn’t startled by his arrival but four years ago she definitely would have noticed him much sooner. She sets the plate she was holding down on the table as she feels his arms slide around her waist. She turns her head to look at him and is met with a kiss.

“Welcome home, Mr. Winchester.” She says as she smiles against his lips. She anticipates his words and waits for the thrill of excitement that rushes through her every time she hears her new name.

“Thank you, Mrs. Winchester.” It never gets old, no matter how many times she hears it. And she’s not sure it ever will.

[The voice coming over the network is recognizably female and perhaps a tad freaked out.]

Um... Hello? Is anyone there? I'm really not sure what this thing is or where I am. It's like something out of John's science fiction shows. [There's the sound of some buttons being pressed, as if whoever's using the device has no idea what she's doing. The voice is growing more irritated.]

Is this thing even on? [A sigh.] Well, if anyone can hear me, my name is Mary Winchester and I could really use some help.

[More button pressing and the transmission ends.]
